Makhana also known as Fox Nut or Gorgon Nut is an important aquatic cash crop with both nutritional and medicinal value. It’s rich in carbohydrate, protein and minerals while fat content is negligible. It has good quantity of minerals like iron, potassium, calcium, phosphorus and sodium. Due to its high nutritive value and uniqueness, Makhana has emerged as potential crop for export and earning foreign exchange. In India, it is mainly grown in North Bihar and parts of Assam, West Bengal and Odisha. Bihar is the leading producer of Makhana (90%) in India and also in the world of which 80% is produced in north-eastern Bihar.
