Understanding Travel Insurance Coverage

Medical Emergencies: The most crucial component. Covers hospitalization, doctor fees, medicines, and emergency medical evacuation. USA plans are priced higher due to expensive healthcare—ensure you have at least $250,000 coverage for USA/Canada travel.

Trip Cancellation & Interruption: Reimburses non-refundable expenses if you have to cancel or cut short your trip due to illness, family emergency, natural disasters, or airline strikes. Keep all receipts for claims.

Baggage Benefits: Covers loss, theft, or delay of checked-in baggage. Baggage delay benefit provides money for essentials if your baggage is delayed beyond 12 hours. Loss coverage reimburses contents up to the sum insured.

Personal Liability: If you accidentally injure someone or damage property during your trip, this covers legal liability. Essential for adventure activities and driving abroad.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mandatory Countries: Schengen countries in Europe require travel insurance with minimum EUR 30,000 coverage. UAE, Thailand, and Turkey also require it for visa processing.

Not Mandatory but Recommended: USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and most Asian countries don't require it by law. However, healthcare costs in these countries are extremely high—USA hospitalization can cost $5,000-10,000 per day.

Pro Tip: Even for countries where it's not mandatory, never travel uninsured. A medical emergency abroad can lead to financial ruin.
Standard Plans: Pre-existing diseases are generally not covered in regular travel insurance. Any claim arising from a pre-existing condition will be rejected.

PED Cover Add-on: Many insurers offer this as an add-on for an additional premium. This covers life-threatening emergencies related to pre-existing conditions like diabetes, hypertension, or heart disease.

Senior Citizen Plans: Some specialized senior plans include PED coverage after a waiting period or cover acute onset of pre-existing conditions up to a certain limit.

Important: Always declare pre-existing conditions at the time of purchase. Non-disclosure can lead to claim rejection.
Individual Plan: Each family member has a separate sum insured. If one person falls sick, their coverage is used without affecting others. Best for solo travelers or families with elderly members.

Family Floater: One sum insured shared by all family members. More economical for young families traveling together. If one member uses most of the coverage, less is available for others.

Example: A $100,000 family floater for 4 people means each person can claim up to $100,000, but the total for all members cannot exceed $100,000. Individual plans of $25,000 each would give each person their own $25,000 coverage.

Recommendation: Choose floater for young families (spouse + kids), individual for families with elderly parents.
Ideal Time: Buy immediately after booking your tickets. This ensures you're covered for trip cancellation from day one.

For Visa: Buy at least 2-3 weeks before visa interview. The policy should show coverage for the entire duration of your planned stay.

Last-Minute: You can buy travel insurance even a day before departure (or at the airport). However, you lose trip cancellation coverage for events that occurred before buying the policy.

Annual Multi-Trip: If you travel frequently for business, an annual policy covers all trips in a year—no need to buy for each trip. Maximum per-trip duration is usually 30-90 days.
Online Extension: Log into your Gydmus account or app, go to your active policy, and select "Extend Policy." Enter the new return date and pay the difference in premium.

Conditions:
- Extension must be done before the current policy expires
- The original policy should not have had any claims
- Total duration cannot exceed 180 days (for most policies)

Documentation: You may need to provide proof of extended stay—delayed return ticket, visa extension letter, or medical documents if the extension is due to illness.

New Policy Alternative: If your original policy has expired, you can buy a fresh policy. However, waiting periods apply, and pre-existing conditions from the trip won't be covered.
